I have a lot of sentimental attachment to the 1966 Ford Galaxie.

From that day in Autumn 1965 when I saw my first 1966 Ford I liked everything about that car and I knew I would be driving one very soon. That day came in early 1966 when I took delivery of my first brand new car, a triple black 1966 Ford Galaxie!

In 1967 I drove that car across the country and after a year of running up and down the West coast I had it shipped to Hawaii where I lived for a year. During that year in Hawaii I met a girl that really caught my eye. The sparks went off and we have been married since January 1969.

After that year in Hawaii my new bride and I drove back across the country to Maryland where we stayed for a year. In late 1970 my Father was thinking of getting a new 1971 Ford. Fortunately for me he liked my Galaxie so well that he went out and bought one for himself - tan with black vinyl roof. Mine had over 80,000 miles on it by now, but his had only 26,000 miles! We struck a deal - I sold mine and then bought his. I couldn’t let this car get away from me!

In the spring of 1971 wanderlust got hold of me again so we hopped into our “new” 1966 Ford Galaxie and were on the road again, this time landing in Eugene, OR. We stayed in Eugene for a year and then it was back to Maryland. This was to be our last cross-country jaunt.

After gaining Federal employment we decided that Maryland is where we would settle and make our home.

In September 1974 our daughter, Michelle, was born. And in February 1976 our son, Stephen, was born. They both came home from the hospital in a 1966 Ford Galaxie.

As our family grew our Galaxie was starting to get small (and a bit weary), so in the summer of 1976 we reluctantly sold this car and bought a 1971 Ford station wagon. That would be the end of our adventures with the 1966 Ford until . . .

Pictured above is my third 1966 Ford Galaxie (three’s a charm, I guess) purchased in September 2003. It is an all-original car with 65,000 miles on it. Every time I am in this car my mind drifts back to the late 60’s and early 70’s - all the memories, the adventures, the travels, the places, the people. That was really a great and memorable time in my life.

These are just some of the reasons for my sentimental attachment to this particular car. This car still looks as good to me today as that first glance back in 1965.

I have been interested in the car hobby for many years. As with woodturning, I enjoy the people, the friendships, the sharing, and I also enjoy driving and exhibiting my 1966 Ford Galaxie.
